Hepatitis C Diagnostic Tests

The effect of Hepatitis C on the health of an individual cannot be completely understood with blood tests. To do this fully, the doctor will require diagnostic tests like a liver biopsy or other non-invasive radiological procedures. Ultrasound or radiological scan will be used to check for hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) in case the patient is affected by cirrhosis.

  • Imaging Studies: Ultrasound makes use of sound waves to produce images of the liver and is very useful to detect cirrhosis or tumours. In case anything is detected, the doctor may suggest you to go in for an MRI or a CT scan.
  • Liver Biopsy: Biopsy involves the study of a tissue taken from the liver by an expert. It is done as an outpatient procedure in a hospital. An ultrasound may be used as a guide to take the tissue from the correct location. The results are available in a week usually and your doctor can make you clear about it.
  • Fibroscan: This is used to measure the elasticity of the liver using a newer technique named transient elastography. It seems to be as effective as the biopsy.
  • Blood tests: Different blood tests give you an indication of the liver fibrosis. Although they may not be accurate, it gives you a fairly good idea of the extent of the degree.

Understanding Your Diagnostic Tests:

There are several ways to evaluate the condition of your liver but the extent of inflammation and scarring is made clearer by the results. The interpretation is on the basis of scoring system and the most popular one is Metavir. It gives you two numbers. The first one or the grade is the amount of inflammation in the liver and the second one or the stage is the degree of liver damage; A0 being no inflammation and A3 meaning severe inflammation. F0 would indicate no fibrosis and F4 meaning cirrhosis.
Do not panic even if your grade and stage is on the other extreme. You and your doctor can come up with a plan to live with the infection for a number of years.

HOW TO CHECK IF YOUR ARE AFFECTED WITH HEPATITIS C VIRUS?

With 2 simple blood tests you can get yourself diagnosed for Hep C. Routine blood test do not cover the below tests analysis. Your Hep C Specialist can run such tests along with additional test if diagnosed.

The Antibody Test

This test helps to detect if you were ever exposed to the Hep C virus.

The Viral Load Test

This is also known as the HCV-RNA test which tells if the virus is currently in your blood, and how much of it you have (your viral load). This test can confirm your diagnosis and is also used to monitor your progress as you undergo treatment.

SCALING HOW MUCH OF YOUR LIVER IS DAMAGED

Knowing the extent of fibrosis (scarring) in your liver can help your Specialist determine the best treatment for you. The result is called your fibrosis score, and there are different methods for measuring this:

BLOOD TEST

Ultra Sound

Use of high frequency sound waves to diagnose certain medical state inside your body

Liver Biopsy

A liver biopsy is a procedure in which a small needle is inserted into the liver to collect a tissue sample of your liver to check scarring.

Scores from the above tests are scaled in between 0-4:

F0

(None)

When its F0, it means your liver is healthy.

F1 / F2

(Mild – Moderate Fibrosis)

Early stages of liver damage with slight scarring

F3

(Severe Fibrosis)

Blood flow in the liver has been affected

F4

(Cirrhosis)

Enough scar tissues to restrict the liver from working.
